Jamie Guined

Jamie Guined currently serves as an Exercise Scientist with the University of Houston supporting the Neurosciences Laboratory at the NASA Johnson Space Center, a journey that has been fueled by a childhood dream of one day working at NASA to help further the human exploration of space.  Jamie’s journey with the U.S. space program began as an undergraduate intern at the NASA Kennedy Space Center where she completed an Exercise Science internship in the Center’s Space Life Sciences division.  Today, the focus of her research is to better understand how spaceflight produces changes to balance and gait control, and the development of effective countermeasures and training programs that will facilitate recovery and mobility after long-duration spaceflight.

Prior to joining the Neuroscience Laboratory, Jamie served as an Exercise Scientist with the Exercise Physiology & Countermeasures Project (ExPC), also at the NASA JSC, where she conducted physiologic, medical requirements, and human performance testing and research of International Space Station & Space Shuttle crewmembers and ground study research subjects. During her time in the ExPC, she also supported post-flight human research activities at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center and Star City, Russia.  Jamie served as the Lead for several ground research projects, in addition to serving as the Lead for clinical stress testing during the 2009 and 2013 NASA astronaut selection campaigns.  Before joining the University of Houston and reporting to Johnson Space Center, Jamie served as a Clinical Exercise Physiologist and Medical Fitness Director at a regional hospital where she worked with patients at every stage along the wellness continuum.  She has also served as a physical education faculty member for Darton State College, and currently serves as a science faculty member for the University of Phoenix.

Jamie holds a Bachelors in Exercise Science/Wellness, a Masters in Health & Physical Education, and a Masters in Business Administration from Georgia Southwestern State University. She is currently a Master’s candidate studying Health Science at the University of Alabama and will graduate in December 2013. Jamie will then attend the University of Texas Medical Branch beginning in Spring 2014, where she will pursue a dual-degree program leading to a PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences and a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT). As a professional Exercise Scientist, she also holds several industry certifications including: Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist from the National Strength & Conditioning Association, Corrective Exercise Specialist and Performance Enhancement Specialist from the National Academy of Sports Medicine, and is a Certified Functional Movement Specialist.

An active member of the spaceflight community and industry, Jamie serves as an adviser to the Mars One Project, CapCom for the Mars Society’s Mars Desert Research Station and Flashline Mars Arctic Research Station, and as Business Development Officer for Astronauts4Hire.

Her business interests are evenly split between the emerging commercial spaceflight industry and the fitness industry, where she specializes in business development and operations for start-ups and early phase businesses. As an active professional in the fitness and human performance industry, Jamie presents regularly at industry conferences and workshops across the U.S.

In her free time Jamie enjoys sailing, geocaching, strength training, outdoor recreation, and competitive martial arts.
